Goodbye Cozumel, Hello Rosenberg!

March 22, 2008

Today was our day to leave. We awoke before 7am and finished the last minute packing. We had our breakfast quickly (french toast) and scrambled around making sure we hadn't left anything behind. By 8:00 am, we were all piled into the van and heading for the airport. Our flight wasn't until 11:10 am, but we wanted to have plenty of time to return the rental cars and get checked in. It is a good thing we allowed for the extra time because returning the cars took forever!!!

We finally got through security (several times) and got onto the plane. It was a TERRIBLE ride home. Since I had been sick throughout the week, my ears plugged up on the plane and literally brought me to tears. I finally got them unplugged, but I had to fight with them the entire 2 hours. I know that doesn't sound like a long time, but when you are in pain, it is. We finally made it off the plane, through customs, and got picked up by my dad.

We went straight from the airport out to Rosenberg to my family's Easter party. We had a great time visiting with everyone and watching the little ones hunt for Easter eggs. We rode around on the golf carts and looked at all the animals, and just spent time visiting with my cousins who were in from Florida. Everyone had a blast. We were exhausted, but happy to be among those that we love. We came home to visit with our puppy (my dad was nice enough to house-sit while we were gone) whom we hadn't seen in a week. He was so excited for us to be home.

Pictures for our trip are now available on my photo website:

Cozumel - Day 7

March 21, 2008

Today was our last full day in Mexico and it was a little bittersweet. We had all had such a great time and didn't want it to end, and were also ready to be heading back to America. We went on one last shopping trip in the morning on the Other Side of the island where I haggled with the salesman on a Mexican silver & Obsidian bracelet for Madison (once she gets older, of course). We also enjoyed one more ride around the island to see the huge waves on the ocean side.

Once we made it back to Villas los Uvas, we learned that we had an unwelcomed visitor while we were out. Apparently, the villa was so beautiful that a local tarantula decided he wanted to come inside! Fortunately, someone caught him before he made it in and tossed him over into the "jungle" (aka weeds). There will be pictures of this little guy soon. Creepy!!!

Mary and I decided to make the most of our last day by laying out next to the pool soaking up some rays. We also lounged around in the pool on floats until it was time to get ready for our last excursion on the pirate boat. We rushed into town to meet up with the cruise, but when we got there, we realized that they were trying to pull a bait & switch. We had signed up for the 2-hour cruise with snacks & open bar ($35 per person), but when we got there it was a Lobster dinner cruise for 4 hours ($70 per person)! With 7 people, we decided to do a little shopping instead. We bought the last of our gifts for the folks back home and headed back to the villa. Our cooks, Jenny & Toro, made a wonderful Mexican feast for our last night on the island. Unfortunately, I wasn't very hungry, so I just sat around and talked with everyone.

It was time to pack and get ready to leave the next day. I was really tired, so I ended up going to sleep about 9pm.

Cozumel - Day 6

March 20, 2008

Today was the day I had been waiting for the entire trip. It was our day to swim with the dolphins!! The excursion wasn't until 2:30 pm, so we were anxious all day for the time to pass.

We spent the morning lounging by the pool reading. It's a hard life, I know.

At 2:00pm, we all piled into the van to make the 1/2 mile trip over to Chankanaab Park, where the Dolphin Discovery is housed. I was SO excited!! We got checked in and then had to wait around by the pool for an hour. We watched excitedly as the dolphins swam around the pools in anticipation. Finally, it was 3:30 pm, and we met our Dolphin guide, Carlos. He took us through the different hand signals we would need to remember to work with our dolphin. He taught is the sign for kiss, hug, and swim. He also showed us how to hold on to the boogie board so the dolphin would push us through the water. We finally put on our life jackets and grabbed a snorkel mask and were on our way into the pool.

We met our dolphin, Estafan, and everyone climbed down the stairs into the chilly pool. One by one we swam out into the middle of the pool and the dolphin would either take you for a ride or push you down the length of the enclosure on the boogie board. Carlos was close by taking pictures, while Fernanda was busy shooting video of the whole trip. After everyone had their 2 turns alone with Estefan, we all swam out and danced with the dolphin and had a little free time. It was truly an experience of a lifetime!! On our way out, we all lined up and got our dolphin kisses. Mary, Chelsea, Amanda, and I really enjoyed ourselves! We bought a copy of the video and all of the pictures, which I will attempt to upload soon.

Cozumel - Day 5

March 19, 2008

Not too much to report. We spent our first night at Villas los Uvas and it was wonderful! No weird smells keeping everyone up at night. I got sick from the smell and am still getting over it.

We pretty much stayed indoors or in the pool at the house on Wednesday. We did take a drive around the island and saw some amazing beaches on the East side of the island. Nowhere you would want to swim for fear of being swept out to sea.

We had lunch at Carlos & Charlie's near the cruise ship dock while Chelsea and Amanda went horseback riding.

Cozumel - Day 4

March 18, 2008

Well, I haven't mentioned the one downside to our beautiful Mexican villa ~ the terrible sewage smell coming from Mike & Francis' room. It seeped out into the courtyard and into my and Steve's room. It was HORRIBLE. Honestly, the best part of Villa Maya was the view and ambiance outside and the cook service. The inside wasn't anything to write home about.

So, this morning we had the final straw. The smell in "Pooville" (as we have come to call it) was so bad that Mike & Francis actually had to sleep outside. I woke up sick from smelling the Bog of Eternal Stench all night long. So, the management company decided that rather than making us endure another stinky minute, they would move us to another house. We drove out this morning to check it out and were blown away at how beautiful it was. We went home and everyone packed immediately. We were out within 30 minutes.

We got settled and hopped in the beautiful fresh water pool overlooking the ocean for a rousing game of keep-away with the splash balls. After our swim, we came in and cleaned up for a delicious surf & turf dinner (we have a new cook service for the rest of the week). The meal was amazing!! Now we are all kicked back and spread out, now that there is more room and everyone isn't sitting on top of each other. We are a little further away from the water now, but have a much better living situation. We have to cross the road and we are on the beach (before, we just jumped off the edge of the backyard.)

I think we will check out the beach tomorrow. I am officially burned on my back, minus a small patch where I could actually spray the sunblock onto my back myself. Lesson learned ~ ask for help!!

Cozumel - Day 3

March 17, 2008 ~ Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

Not that we remembered or cared that it was St. Pat's Day. Ah well.

Today we had a delicious breakfast prepared by our cook, Isabel. The pancakes and bacon were really yummy. After breakfast we took a quick trip into town to find Tequilla and the grocery store. After that trip, we all ran in and changed into bathing suits and flung ourselves into the ocean to snorkel. We also got the bright idea to feed the fish so that we would have more to look at. If it ever comes up in conversation, tropical fish LOVE dog food. Just sayin...

After snorkeling, I laid out for a little while and got a small sunburn (my first of 2008!). Steve and his dad went on an ATV ride through the "jungle" while Melissa, Chelsea, Amanda, and I went back to Margaritaville for lunch. On the way back from lunch, we stopped at the grocery store again to get more beer. I think that our group have gone through 5 cases of beer since we got here 2 days ago. Note, only 3-4 of the 9 people actually drink beer.

After lunch I laid around reading while other went snorkeling again. I didn't want to risk a more severe burn. I need to give this one overnight to set up into a tan. Dinner was chile rellanos that were stuffed with cheese and shrimp. OMG - SO good!! We won't know what to do with ourselves when we go back home! Right now, I am relaxing with my book while the others play beach volleyball in our yard. I am the first to admit that I do not have a single athletic bone in my body, except for snorkeling. I really enjoy the hell out of snorkeling. We saw a lot of fish today and even a barracuda! I do plan to go back out tomorrow, but not without my SPF 50 sunblock (Steve took off with mine to go on the ATV trip).

Cozumel - Day 2

March 16, 2008

So, when I went to bed last night, I ended up taking a Benedryl to keep me from having any allergy problems from the new room and bed I was sleeping in. I don't know if it was that, or sheer exhaustion, but I slept like a log! Steve, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky. Our room has a king-sized bed and a twin bed (the villa is 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and sleeps 14), so I let Steve have the big bed to himself and I took the twin bed, which was MUCH more comfortable. I got up about 7 am local time (8:00 am at home) and went and met Randy & Melissa (Father-in-law and step-mother-in-law) at the hotel next door for breakfast. After breakfast I came back to the villa and read a little. It is wonderful to relax and read without chores or other things looming over you.

We finally got Steve out of bed at noon and went to lunch. I didn't catch the name, but it was Mexican food, unlike yesterday. It was GOOD. Then we shopped a little and took a drive around the island. After, literally, 5 minutes at a beach, we loaded back into the car and drove back to the villa. Everyone got back in their bathing suits and we all hopped into the ocean and snorkelled around for a while. We had so much fun and saw three rays and a ton of fish. I am looking forward to doing it more the rest of the week and getting some great pictures with my digital camera (complete with underwater case!).

We are all showered and dressed and heading out for dinner in a few minutes (Sunday is the cook's day off). We will probably end up going back to the hotel next door, since it is so close. After dinner I will probably read, and then go to bed early. This is one of those places where you want to go to bed early so you can wake up and great the day. Maybe that is just me. I have never been a morning person, but it really is amazing just how beautiful the mornings are here. Truly breath-taking.

Cozumel - Day 1

March 15, 2008

Hey everyone!! I decided to do a nightly blog on my days in Cozumel. I figure that will make my trip easier to scrapbook when the time comes. Plus, my millions of readers can catch up with my adventures. LOL Yeah right. I do love my loyal readers. All three of you. It's ok to comment, lurkers, I promise I won't bite!!

Ok, so Day 1 began our adventure at 5:30 am when we got up to get ready to go to the airport. We decided to be rebels and NOT get there the 2 hours ahead of time, like we should. We ended up in two very long lines to check bags and to get through security. We ended up getting to the gate 10 minutes before they began boarding the flight. Luckily, my father-in-law, Randy, is an uber flyer, so we got to board early. The flight was enjoyable. We took pictures of cool cloud formations, and goofy pictures of each other. We landed in Cozumel and began the annoying tasks of passing through immigration, getting bags, going throug Customs and hoping that the red light didn't go off on your turn through, and finally waiting around for the bozos on "Island Time" to finalize the rental car process. We ended up renting 3 cars since there are 9 of us and we will be going on various excursions throuhout the visit.

Once we finally made it to Villa Maya, we got into our rooms, ooohed and aaahed over the place and its spectacular view of the ocean, then we ventured out for somewhere to have lunch. Our villa has a cook who will be cooking for us 6 days, 2 meals per day, but she wasn't cooking until dinner. We ended up at Jimmy Buffett's Margeritaville. It was a lot of fun and the food was pretty good. We came back to the house and everyone ran to get into their bathing suits to jump into the freshwater pool inside the villa courtyard. Steve, Mary, Chelsea, Amanda, and I had a great time playing keep away and pelting each other with water balls. Mary and I left the fun early in favor of going out by the ocean and laying out in the sun. We watched a pirate ship (excursion) go by as the sun set on our first day in Mexico.

For dinner, Isabel, the cook, made a wonderful tortilla soup, the BEST chicken enchilladas on earth, and a wonderful vanilla ice cream that we would have sworn was homemade, but was actually Nestles Vanilla. Go figure! After dinner, everyone laid around watching a little TV until one by one people kept leaving the room and not coming back. Everyone was so drained from starting out so early and the excitement of the day! I think the last person went to bed about 9 pm local time.

PS - I will add pictures to the blog later. I didn't bring my camera cord to upload the pictures.

It's time to fly!!

Well, almost. Tomorrow morning Steve and I are going to Cozumel with his family. I am super excited to spend the time relaxing and recharging my batteries in the sun. I have books (going to re-read Lord of the Rings like a dork, but I love it), tunes, and an awesome underwater case for my digital camera. Today I even bought my own snorkel gear! I hope to get some amazing photos while I am gone. I will upload them to my photo website when we return.

We come back next Saturday and will be picked up at the airport by my dad and we will head straight out to our family's place in Rosenberg for the family Easter party. My cousin Jean is coming in for the weekend, so I am really excited to spend some time with her. She and her hubby Wendell will be moving back to Texas before the end of the year, so that will be fantastic. I can't wait until they are here all the time.

Anyway, it is time for me to hop in the shower and get ready for bed. Our flight is at 9:00 am at Intercontinental Airport in Houston, so we have to leave pretty early to get there on time.

Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,'
Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Seven Days More

We leave for Cozumel, Mexico in 7 days!! I am so ready to lay in the sun and relax. I hope it is a great trip. I plan to swim with the dolphins, bake in the sun, and get some reading done. I need a new book - Any suggestions??

What a Miserable Week

I posted the other day that I haven't been feeling well lately. I thought everything was stress and would eventually pass. Last Saturday, I went to pick up Madison to take her on her first trip to the zoo and on the way I ended up getting a flat tire on the freeway. Madison's daddy was awesome and came out to change the tire for me. He ended up taking her back home so I could go to the tire store and get the tire replaced. While waiting for my replacement tire, I began to feel really anxious and sick. By the time I got home, I was vomitting and basically miserable. We had plans to have dinner with friends, and I wanted to back out. Steve convinced me that I ought to go, and against my better judgment, I did. Never ignore your instincts. I was sick the whole time and miserable. We came home and I was up all night feeling slightly worse than death warmed over. This continued through Monday morning.

I went to the doctor Monday morning once I realized that in less than 48 hours, I had lost 16 lbs. Once examined, the doctor's office called the ambulance and I was taken to the Emergency Room for a closer examination. The ER doctor did not like the look of my tests, so he had me admitted to the hospital. I was so relieved. In the past, I have visited the ER and have been sent home without answers, or feeling better. After more extensive testing, the doctors have determined that I have a problem with my stomach where the contents do not drain as normal, which causes a lot of problems. They also found 2 ulcers, a polyp (removed now), and a hiatal hernia. The doctor feels that I had this problem mildly before my lap band surgery, but that the procedure has aggrevated the condition. He has recommended that I have the band surgically removed. I am looking into that. After 5 days of medication and rest, I was able to come home yesterday. Today I am trying to take it easy and recupperate.

Hopefully with this new discovery I will finally be on the road to recovery. I have been sick for about a year basically, which doesn't feel good at all.
